2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV) “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
As we reflect this Friday on the suffering of Jesus let’s remember some amazing truths about what He did for you and me…
#1 Jesus was the perfect God of the universe
Jesus being the Son of God, was God. Jesus lived the perfect life that we should’ve lived. Think of it the God of the universe humbled himself to become a man to reconcile God with man. I think it is incredible how God is the iniatiator of this entire transaction.
#2 Jesus took upon Himself all of our sin, past present and future
Jesus our passover lamb was the innocent whose blood was spilt and spiritually spread across the doorway of our lives (a representation of the Passover in Exodus). The innocent who was perfect could only suffice for guilty man; not a mere man could atone for the sins of another because he himself is guilty before the judge; it took the blood of the God-Man Jesus Christ.
#3 Jesus allowed us to become the righteousness of God
This was a matter of position. Our unrighteousness for Christ’s righteousness (holiness/perfection in all things); we the unrighteous are credited with the full benefits and righteousness of the perfect Son of God. While we did nothing to save ourselves, it took the blood of Jesus to make us right before the Father. When the Father looks at you and me, He only can see what Jesus did for us, our sins have been washed away and we (if we have accepted Christ as our Savior) have been forgiven.
What is amazing is that Jesus Christ died only once for our sin. Other religions say that Jesus had to continually suffer the wrath of God forever. That is wrong. Jesus absorbed (like a sponge, soaked up) every last drop of wrath that the Father had against sin and evil and took the wrath and died. On the third day He rose, signifying the crushing of all of his enemies, including death and the grave. All of this because of the Great exchange that occurred between Jesus and you & me. Thank God for the suffering that He endured to take every last sin we will ever commit and cover it fully with the blood of Jesus.
Remember the old hymn:
What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus! What can make me pure again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus! Oh! Precious is the flow, that makes me white as snow; no other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus!
Thank you Jesus for washing away our sins!
Have a blessed Good Friday,
